We’re at the outset of the August long weekend and fellow Substackers have been doing some outstanding writing these days. The fruits of their labours are well worth the read, with a few referenced in the Suggested Reading below.
Meanwhile, yours truly is taking some travel time, which has also turned into some off-grid time—only partly by choice.
Those billboards trumpeting FREE WIFI along the Courage Highway make sense now. Here at the westernmost edges of Lake Superior, the drafts aren’t loading and changes aren’t syncing. Those versions just aren’t updating—an apt representation of the cerebrum too.
This month was to be my great unveiling of four possible responses to authoritarian rule.
Not happening.
No, the “next big things” are going to have to wait. On the bright side, the North shore of Lake Superior is stunning through the haze of Western forest fires at dusk.
I’d post a picture but it won’t upload. You get the idea though. This country is a keeper. All of it. Coast to coast to coast. So let’s enjoy and defend and keep it, with all the responsibility that entails.
Hopefully there’s a little lake somewhere near you too, with campfires or fireflies or whatever it is that lights you up in August.
